Break Free to be Smokefree!

Wednesday 10th March was National No Smoking Day and NHS Bristol Stop Smoking Service joined forces with South Gloucestershire Stop Smoking Service to raise awareness of the support the NHS can offer to those wishing to stop smoking. We had three sites across Bristol, Asda Patchway, The Podium, Broadmead and Asda Bedminster.

The dedicated stop smoking teams decorated each stand with banners, balloons, posters & freebies to attract the crowds! The day was a great success, although a little chilly! Across the three sites we engaged with over 250 smokers and gave out over 100 information packs to people who are thinking about stopping smoking and people also signed up on the spot for our various groups and clinics so a great deal of awareness was raised!

Avon Fire and Rescue were also on hand to raise awareness of their ‘Put it out, Right out’ campaign which aims to highlight the dangers of smoking in the home. Households with a smoker are one and a half times more likely to suffer a fire than smokefree households. At Asda Bedminster Avon Fire and Rescue arrived in a fire engine which helped attract the crowds.

Boots and Superdrug in Broadmead along with the pharmacies in Asda had their stop smoking advisors available to offer advice and provide Nicotine Replacement Therapy to those wished to break free from cigarettes there and then!  Advisors based in St George Health Centre also dedicated their day to helping patients to stop smoking by holding a stand in the health centre and raising the awareness of the day to every patient!

Thank-you to all those who helped make the day a success, we look forward to doing it again next year!
